Theodore always had a cold, aloof, and stand-offish demeanour through his childhood and into his adult life. However, it is only in his adult life where he has really been 'in touch' with his emotions; often finding himself in episodes of anger, frustration and longing for something better. We call this the midlife crisis.
Theo is intelligent, thorough and often patronising and critical of others. Because of his high-class upbringing, he often looks down on others: no matter what kind of an upbringing they have. Although he will never openly admit it (unlike his loud-mouth classmate Draco Malfoy), Theo never really liked or trusted muggles, or those of muggleborn lineage. He is narrow-minded in that sense. He values manners, respect and order. It's his way, or the high way.

The Nott family are a prestigious, pureblood wizarding family who value the ideology of Salazar Slytherin: pureblood means everything. Elderly Calder Nott was in his sixties when he presumed his lineage would not prosper, but then he met Delta; a woman of suitable dynasty, who was more than half his age. The pair were married under the scrutiny of the wizard populace. Most assumed Delta was only after one thing: the Nott family fortune.
Theodore couldn't say if this were true, because unfortunately he never really knew his mother. She died when he was five of a dreadful illness, and he was a witness to her dying breath. Because of that; Theodore could see Thestrals. He hated the beasts, and feared them amongst all others.
Theodore was a compliant and studious child. He followed his father's strict teachings, and learnt from an early age to shut away his emotions. Calder Nott said emotions were unsightly. Theo believed him. He drank in everything about pureblood superiority: that muggleborns were a curse to the wizarding world, and had to be diminished and shunned.
Learning that his father had been a Death Eater was harder to stomach than he thought. Shunning muggleborns was one thing: torturing and killing was another. When Theodore's father died in 1999, he stood by the side of his fiancée Daphne and thought of Calder Nott as nothing more than a murderer...
People often said that Unspeakables were 'curious people'. Theo could argue that he wasn't curious; he was a doer. He climbed the ladder of the Ministry because he didn't let anything stand in the way of his career: not his wife, or his children, or his friends. They all knew what he was like. They knew to leave him alone. He'd always felt alone, really. No amount of family or friends or fortune could change that.
